It looks like Meg Ryan — who has not made a major motion picture in years — will likely be reunited with her "Sleepless in Seattle" co-star, Tom Hanks, in a remake of a movie that was the favorite of the longtime head of MGM, Louis B. Mayer.

The original was called "The Human Comedy," which is also the name of the book the movie is based upon. The book was by famous Armenian-American writer William Saroyan, and is about the comings and goings of the people who live in a small town durning World War II.

Reports Pamela McClintock in The Hollywood Reporter, "Tom Hanks is in talks to reunite with his 'Sleepless in Seattle' co-star star Meg Ryan in 'Ithaca,' the film adaptation of William Saroyan's classic 1943 novel 'The Human Comedy' that marks Ryan's directorial debut. She'll start shooting next month in Virginia."

Both Ryan and Hanks would also appear in the movie.

The report continues, "Set in a small town in California's San Joaquin Valley in 1942, Ithaca recounts the story of 14-year-old Homer Macauley, a telegraph bike messenger. His older brother has gone to fight in World War II, leaving him to care for his widowed mother, his older sister and his 4-year-old brother, Ulysses. The effects of the war are revealed as Homer delivers messages of love, friendship, pain and death, including one message that alters his own life forever. Hanks would play the boy's father." 

Ryan may play the role of the widowed mother.

The original MGM movie version of "The Human Comedy" starred Mickey Rooney as the messenger. The film won Saroyan an Oscar for Best Story.
