Syfy Picks Up Where Fox Left Off, Orders Adaptation of Fantasy Novel

Syfy is moving ahead with a project based on a best-selling fantasy novel. Deadline.com reports that the cable channel ordered a pilot adapting Lev Grossman’s “The Magicians.”

It’s the second time the novel has been adapted for TV, with Fox making an attempt at developing the material in 2011, although that effort didn’t move forward.

The Syfy pilot, from Universal Cable Productions, was written by John McNamara of “Prime Suspect” and Sera Gamble of “Supernatural.” The 2009 book is about a group of young New Yorkers who study magic, and find out a novel they read as children is actually based on reality.

Syfy's pilot order for “The Magicians” comes as the network is pushing more into scripted series, including its six-part event series “Ascension,” and series including “12 Monkeys” and “The Expanse.”
