Report: NBC News Boss Apologizes After Ruffling Feathers Among Her Execs

Aug 27, 2014  •  Post A Comment

NBC News President Deborah Turness ruffled feathers and reportedly “had to apologize after infuriating top execs and talent” when she told The New York Times the news unit “had gone to sleep,” reports the New York Post.

Turness made the comments in a Sunday article, where she told The Times’ Bill Carter, “People in the organization from top to bottom recognized that NBC News hadn’t kept up with the times in all sorts of ways, for maybe 15 years.”

She added, “I think the organization had gone to sleep.”

The Post reports that Tom Brokaw, the anchor and managing editor of NBC’s “Nightly News” from 1982 until 2004, as well as Turness’ predecessor Steve Capus and CNN chief Jeff Zucker, a former top NBC executive, were upset about the comment.

Turness was reportedly “forced to send out apologetic e-mails to staff addressing her comment,” the Post notes.

Representatives for NBC, Capus, and Zucker didn’t respond to requests for comment, the publication adds.

  1. Apparently the truth hurts!

  2. I can not speak to the inside facts because I was not there.

I can, however give an unabashed observation.

The biggest mistake ever made by management was to bring Jeff Zucker off the studio floor where he was making the TODAY Show run. That he was competent at doing. He is ill suited to manage more than a daily broadcast. CNN is bleeding now and for sometime to come as long as he remains there. It is long past time for them to call it a day with Zucker and cut their losses by one and put his inflated salary to keeping many on the job.

As Doug points out above: “Apparently the truth hurts!”

  3. To be completely honest, I was very excited about Jeff Zucker going to CNN..but this too has soon faded. I also had a ton of respect for Don Lemmon but not now for he sold himself out to the cause in Missouri when he failed to tell the other side. How he never questioned the Chief of Police for marching and taking part in a PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION. How did the Chief of Police get to march hand in had with the NAACP while wearing a police uniform while DEMONSTRATING which is a conflict of interest. Where was Don Lemmon? Where is Jeff Zucker? He invested in people like Chris Cuomo who seems to be rather mysogynistic. A “star” whose power only radiates as brightly who he sits next to. Dianne Sawyer, yes. Chris lacks that warm appeal to women because he really cannot stand them. Where is Jeff Zucker? Pierce Morgan was great in my opinion until they let him go off about guns. Stay out of giving opinions on people’s rights. Period…
