Actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead this morning, with authorities saying they believe his death was caused by suicide by asphyxiation, The Huffington Post reports.

Williams, 63, was found in his home in Tiburon, Calif.

His publicist indicated that Williams had been suffering from severe depression.

Williams recently starred in the CBS comedy series “The Crazy Ones,” which was canceled after one season.

“Williams was best known for his starring roles in classic comedies like ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ and ‘Jumanji.’ He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dr. Sean Maguire in ‘Good Will Hunting.’ He rose to fame while playing Mork the alien in the TV show ‘Mork & Mindy,’ a ‘Happy Days’ spinoff,” the story reports.

His wife, Susan Schneider, released a statement to the New York Times’ Dave Itzkoff, saying: “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

The Huffington Post article adds: “Though Williams was most celebrated for his acting career, he is also remembered [for] his charitable endeavors. Williams spearheaded Comic Relief, which holds concerts and variety shows to raise money to help the homeless.”

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement saying an investigation into Williams’ death is under way.

Williams’ fellow actors expressed their sentiments on Twitter, with Steve Martin tweeting: “I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul.”

Actor Albert Brooks sent out this tweet: “Shocked by the news of Robin Williams passing. Rest in peace my friend”
