A new drama series that was considered one of the fall season’s safest bets among new shows proved the prognosticators right, as CBS’s “NCIS: New Orleans” had a strong opening night.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the Eye Network’s combo of “NCIS” at 9 p.m. and “New Orleans” at 9 p.m. dominated Tuesday prime time in total viewers, based on Nielsen overnights, with the flagship drama pulling about 18 million viewers and “NCIS: N.O.” drawing 17.1 million for its series premiere. However, NBC’s two-hour singing competition “The Voice” claimed a decisive win in its head-to-head battle with the two dramas in the key demo of viewers 18-49.

“The Voice” delivered a preliminary 4.0 average rating in the 18-49 demo to easily claim top show of the night, outpacing “NCIS” with a 2.9 and “New Orleans” with a 2.5 as NBC handily won the night in the demo. “The Voice,” however, fell short among older viewers, winding up with an average of 13 million total viewers.

NBC’s “Chicago Fire” owned the 10 p.m. slot in the 18-49 demo with a 2.7 average, topping CBS’s “Person of Interest” (1.8 average) and ABC’s regular time slot premiere of “Forever” (1.7). “Person of Interest,” however, eased past “Chicago Fire” in total viewers, 10.7 million to 9.4 million.

ABC couldn’t keep pace with the high-profile premieres on NBC and CBS, with the season two premiere of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” settling for a 1.9 average in viewers 18-49 and 5.6 million total viewers — less than a third of the total viewers who turned out for time slot rival “NCIS: New Orleans.” ABC kicked off Tuesday prime time with a third-place 1.6 average in 18-49 for “Dancing with the Stars” (9.6 million total viewers).

Fox was less than competitive with its Big Four rivals, and wound up in fifth place for the night behind Univision. “Utopia” kicked things off with a 0.8 average in adults 18-49, followed by “New Girl” with a 1.3 and “The Mindy Project” with a 1.0.

For prime time overall, NBC finished well out front in viewers 18-49 with a 3.6 average, followed by CBS (2.4 average), ABC (1.8), Univision (1.2), Fox (1.0) and CW (0.3). CBS was comfortably ahead in total viewers, averaging 15.25 million to lead NBC (11.81 million), ABC (7.22 million), Univision (2.94 million), Fox (2.07 million) and CW (0.676 million).

  1. Just another cookie-cutter duplicate that won’t turn any critical praise.
