‘Sopranos’ Creator David Chase Says He Won’t ‘Befriend Any Journalist’

“The Sopranos” creator David Chase tells the Daily Beast that he will not “befriend any journalist” after talking with a Vox reporter who, he says, misconstrued his comments about the the show’s ending.

As previously reported, Vox wrote that Chase said Tony Soprano was still alive, apparently clearing up a question that has been hanging over the HBO program since its ambiguous ending. But Chase disputed the report, with his publicist saying that the writer had “misconstrued” what he had said.

“This has taught me, for good and all, not to befriend any journalist,” Chase told the Daily Beast. “I got too friendly with her. And I kept saying to her, ‘You know, this can’t be good that you and I talk to each other and have lunch and coffee. Something’s wrong here,’ and she’d say, ‘No, no, no.’ And she meant that — she wasn’t setting me up. It seems like, poor Dave, there’s no way he can win.”

He added, “I don’t recall that conversation. I’m sure it happened, but I don’t recall it, and if I did say that, I believe I was probably thinking about something else.”

  1. I’m a big fan of the Sopranos’ and the last scene was shot in my hometown ice cream parlor. A place that was the regular “after the school dance” hangout. David Chase went to great lengths to indicate that Tony did not get whacked! First of all, the location of the family dinner was spur of the moment. No foe would have know they were gathering at Holsteins. Then there is the “code” that families are left alone, so killing the whole family would have gone against the common story line throughout the series. But the strongest indication was the choice of the music – “Don’t Stop Believiin” by Journey. So why Chase is upset that this reporter wrote his exact words seems strange. Obviously the series ended allowing for a later continuation, perhaps following the “Godfather” path with Tony’s son at the helm. But the ending was not ambiguous and Chase’s comments were not “misconstrued”.

  2. The very sad fact is that James Gondolfini is no longer with us. So the “real” Tony Soprano (Mr. Gondolfini) can never be cast again… so why in God’s name does it matter now, if Tony is still “alive” or not???

  3. Just more of David Chase’s usual spleen and imbalance. We’ve been ignoring him for years.

  4. Biff, Baby

How can you be ignoring this guy and reading and texting about him at the same tine, you stupid d-bag? Talk about spleen.
