The most promising new show in advance of the launch of the 2014-2015 season is Fox’s “Gotham,” according to a poll of Television Critics Association members.

“Gotham,” a Batman prequel tracking the early days of Commissioner James Gordon, was followed in the overall top new show category by the CW’s dramedy “Jane the Virgin,” with Showtime’s “The Affair,” starring Maura Tierney, coming in third.

Among new comedies, the ABC program “Black-ish,” which stars Anthony Anderson and Lawrence Fishburne, was voted most promising, followed by “Jane the Virgin” and NBC’s “A to Z.” In the drama category, “Gotham” won as the most promising new show, followed by “The Affair” and ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder.”

The poll also ranks potential breakout stars, with Gina Rodriguez of “Jane the Virgin” topping the list. Grant Gustin of CW’s “The Flash” came in second, followed by Robin Lord Taylor of “Gotham.”

“If the 2014 Fall survey results are any indication, we’re in for an exciting new season of television,” said Scott D. Pierce, TCA president and TV critic for The Salt Lake Tribune, in a statement. “This year featured a surprising number of close races, with the high quality of both programming and performers giving our voters a tough time as they made their picks. From superheroes and murder mysteries to out-of-the-box comedies and gritty dramas, this is one of the most eclectic seasons in recent memory, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.”
