Stephen Colbert, who is taking over the reins of CBS’s “Late Show” from David Letterman, has scheduled his last airing of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” according to TheWrap.
The show’s last episode will air Thursday, Dec. 18. Before that final installment was announced, the show had been showing what TheWrap calls “a sporadic countdown during opening credits,” but it wasn’t entirely clear when the show had been slated to sign off.
“Colbert will retire his fictional ‘Colbert Report’ persona as well, hosting ‘Late Show’ as himself,” the report notes.
“The Colbert Report” first aired in 2005 as a spinoff of Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show,” and Colbert was eventually tapped to succeed Letterman when he steps down in 2015. No specific date for Letterman’s departure from “Late Show” has been announced yet, the story adds.
“There is expected to be a break between hosts, with some speculation that Colbert might launch his ‘Late Show’ in September 2015 to coincide with next year’s fall television season,” the piece notes.
