Fox has signed a singing sensation and a star singer/dancer for its live presentation of the classic musical “Grease.”
The two are Vanessa Hudgens, one of the main stars from Disney’s original “High School Musical” franchise, and Julianne Hough, who is both a two-time pro champion on “Dancing with the Stars,” but is also now a judge on that show. She also has a country album out.
Hudgens will play Rizzo and Hough will play Sandy. In the movie those roles were played by Stockard Channing and Olivia Newton-John, respectively. In the original Broadway production, Rizzo was played by Adrienne Barbeau, and Sandy was played by Carole Demas.
“Grease” is scheduled to air on Fox next year, on Sunday, Jan, 31, 2016. It will be be a three-hour show, and be shown live in the Eastern and Central time zones, and tape-delayed on the West Coast.
The original Broadway production of “Grease” opened in February, 1972. The movie version came out in 1978. Fox has said its version will be based on both the stage show and the movie. Paramount Television is producing the show for Fox.
