After almost pulling a repeat of his notorious 2009 Taylor Swift MTV Video Music Awards intervention, Kanye West had an unusual explanation for his antics at Sunday’s Grammy Awards.

TV Guide reports that West said he was listening to voices in his head.

“While Kanye didn’t fully reenact his infamous ‘Imma let you finish, but…’ moment — which occurred at the 2009 VMAs when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s VMA win for Best Female Video — he certainly came close,” the publication reports. “On Sunday, as Beck accepted the Grammy for Album of the Year, West made it partway up to the stage before thinking better of it and returning to his seat.”

West reportedly said later that night that Beyonce should have won the award and that Beck should “respect artistry.”

In an appearance Wednesday on Ryan Seacrest’s morning radio show, West talked about the Grammys incident. TV Guide quotes West saying: “Right when that happened, everybody was looking at me and then people started screaming, ‘Kanye! Kanye! Go do it!’ Okay, that didn’t really happen. These were voices in my head. So the voices in my head told me to go and then I just walked up like halfway up the stage.”

West added that the stunt was “kind of a joke, like the Grammys themselves.”
