Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger broke plenty of news about upcoming “Star Wars” movies during the company’s annual shareholder meeting today in San Francisco.
The Los Angeles Times reports that one of the key bits of info is the release date for “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which will open May 26, 2017.
“’Episode VIII’ will be directed by Rian Johnson (‘Looper’), who will take the reins of the saga from J.J. Abrams — Abrams’ film, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ is set to open Dec. 18 and will see stars of the landmark original trilogy reprise their iconic roles alongside a large ensemble of newcomers including John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac,” the Times reports.
Iger also announced that a planned series of “Star Wars” spinoff movies will begin with one titled “Rogue One,” starring Felicity Jones. “Directed by Gareth Edwards (‘Godzilla’) and set for release Dec. 16, 2016, that film is set to begin filming this summer in London with a screenplay from Chris Weitz (‘About a Boy,’ ‘Cinderella’),” the report notes.
