One of the mainstays of the legendary band the Grateful Dead is the subject of a new doucmentary that’s premiering soon on Netflix. The streaming service announced that “The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir” will roll out May 22.

The doc comes from director Mike Fleiss, known for projects including “The Bachelor” and “God Bless Ozzy Osbourne.”

“The Netflix original documentary, winner of the 2014 Audience Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival, provides a revelatory look at Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead, and will be available to stream in all Netflix territories,” the service announced.

Said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary and Comedy: “Mike Fleiss was given unprecedented access to create an intimate and compelling film about one of the most prolific, respected and beloved musicians of our time. We are proud to bring Bob’s story to his fans around the world on the eve of the Dead’s final shows at Soldier Field in Chicago.”

Fleiss added: “We certainly unearthed a lot of buried treasure from the Grateful Dead archive while making this film. With Netflix, we have found the perfect global partner to tell the fascinating life story of Bob Weir set against the backdrop of America’s greatest rock band.”

  1. Bob Weir was undeservedly in the shadow of Jerry Garcia for many years, but he has been an extremely innovative rhythm guitarist, bringing an essential ingredient to their group mind and improvisational stew. His knowledge of jazz, blues, country, jug band and rock & roll made him an essential “tether” that kept the Dead’s music grounded not in a limiting way, but rather in keeping it accessible. He is more than due a thoughtful examination and celebration. I cannot wait to see this program!
