Melissa Rivers, who has carried on as a producer of E!’s “Fashion Police” following the death of her mother and co-host, Joan Rivers, unleashed a torrent of criticism against her mom’s replacement, Kathy Griffin.
Griffin left the show after a short stint as one of the hosts following Joan Rivers’ death in September.
USA Today reports: “In an interview with ‘Today’ show’s Hoda Kotb at a special chat at the 92nd Y in NYC, Rivers says the way Griffin left the show a few months ago really ticked her off.”
Melissa Rivers is quoted saying: “My biggest complaint (about Griffin) was the feeling that she kind of (bleeped) all over my mother’s legacy in her statement on leaving. I know that was not an intentional reading of it, but that’s how I felt. … I know everything was so heightened and everybody was so crazy, but that was my takeaway, by calling the comedy and the style of it old-fashioned — it was like, I understand what you were doing, you’re trying to save yourself, but don’t crap all over my mother to do it.”
The show has been in turmoil especially since co-host Giuliana Rancic made controversial comments on the program about Zendaya’s hair. Melissa Rivers said the situation would have been different had her mom been involved.
“It never would have happened if she was alive,” Rivers said. “I think there might be a little bit of a twinkle in her eye, saying, ‘Y’all couldn’t do it without me, could ya?’ And then, after that, I think she would be a little bit frustrated. … If something like that had happened and my mother had been alive, her reaction immediately would have been, ‘Are you serious? Oh, please. All this over a wig?’ Literally, it was a wig. Let’s just all relax.”
Both Griffin and co-host Kelly Osbourne left the program following Rancic’s comments.
