With legendary singer Dolly Parton making a surprise appearance at the NBC upfront presentation today in New York, the network announced that it has greenlighted its first original movie under a development deal with Parton.
“Coat of Many Colors,” named after her song, will be based on the singer’s life story, with Parton on board as an executive producer.
Parton has said the song — which tells the story of a coat stitched together from rags, which she wore as a child — is her favorite among the many she has written.
NBC announced a deal with the singer back in January, with the arrangement set to include a series of standalone TV movies based on her songs, her stories and her life. Parton, who may appear in some of the productions, is developing the projects with her production partner Sam Haskell of Magnolia Hill Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.
