One new Halloween costume this year is getting a lot of buzz — much of it negative. The fuss is all about costumes based on Caitlyn Jenner, the Los Angeles Times reports.
“News that several costume companies, including Spirit Halloween and Anytime Costumes, plan to sell a unisex Caitlyn Jenner costume for this year’s Halloween festivities blazed across social media, as commenters expressed outrage over what one called ‘transmisogyny,'” the story reports.
A petition has been launched on change.org to try to convince Spirit, reportedly the nation’s largest Halloween retailer, to abandon plans for the Caitlyn costume. The Times reports that 3,425 people had signed the petition by midday today.
The report quotes Spirit spokeswoman Trisha Lombardo defending the costume idea in an interview with the New York Daily News.
Lombardo is quoted saying: “Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year. Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her.”
A number of Twitter users lashed out against the costume. Wrote one: “the caitlyn jenner halloween costumes are disgusting. being trans isn’t a ‘costume’ and treating it as such is ignorant & transphobic.”
