Monday Prime-Time Ratings: Does the Fall Season Already Have Its First New Hit?

Monday’s prime-time broadcast ratings saw one new show make a big splash while a number of returning shows fell flat. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that NBC’s drama “Blindspot” may be the season’s first new hit after premiering to a 3.1 average rating in the key 18-49 demo, based on Nielsen overnights.

“Blindspot” benefited from having the choice leadout spot following the powerhouse two-hour season premiere of NBC’s “The Voice,” which delivered a 3.5 average in 18-49. The combination gave NBC an easy win for the night in the demo, along with a narrow win in total viewers.

The demo numbers for the night saw NBC finish at No. 1 with a 3.4 average, followed by CBS (2.3 average), ABC (1.6), Fox (1.3) and CW (0.4). NBC won total viewers by averaging 11.645 million to lead CBS (11.211 million), ABC (10.109 million), Fox (3.792 million) and CW (1.221 million).

The top show of the night, both in adults 18-49 and in total viewers, was on CBS, which kicked off prime-time with the season premiere of its comedy juggernaut “The Big Bang Theory.” The show delivered a 4.5 in the demo along with a whopping 17.48 million total viewers.

Leading out from “Big Bang,” the new series “Life in Pieces” got off to a solid start with a 2.7 average in 18-49 along with 11.52 million total viewers.

Season two of CBS’s “Scorpion” launched with a 2.2 average in the 18-49 demo — well below the 3.2 delivered by the series premiere a year ago. At 10 p.m., against “Blindspot” and ABC’s season premiere of “Castle,” CBS’s season premiere for “NCIS: Los Angeles” managed only a 1.2 in the demo, tying “Castle.” The CBS drama was well off last season’s pace, when the premiere pulled a 1.9.

ABC’s two-hour “Dancing with the Stars” chugged along with a 1.8 average in 18-49, slipping from last week’s 2.3. “Castle’s” 1.2 was well below the 2.2 for the season premiere a year ago.

On fourth-place Fox, the new season of “Gotham” stumbled out of the gate, managing just a 1.6 average rating in adults 18-49 after the series bowed with a 3.3 last year. Leading out from “Gotham,” the new series “Minority Report” settled for a 1.1.

  1. Of course it’s not a hit.

Blindspot had so-so ratings, lost about 20% of its lead-in in the first half-hour, and then lost another 15% of what was left.

    That’s not hit material.

If it stayed where it is it’d be Greg Berlanti’s best-rated show ever and a so-so rater (which of course tvbytheprspin.com would call a “smash hit”) but all the signs point to another Greg Berlanti flop.

Also, Big Bang Theory was over 100,000 viewers HIGHER than last year.

So not all shows lost audience from one year to the next (although the others did deserve their lower ratings, IMO).

  2. People will get tired of this show just like they did with John Doe and Nowhere Man. This one just has a chick with tattoos.
