NBC hit a ratings home run — or scored a touchdown, if sticking with a football metaphor is important — with its opener to the NFL season, a Thursday night matchup in which the New England Patriots knocked off the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-21.
Deadline.com reports that the game delivered a 17.7 rating/30 share in metered market results, equaling the 2010 Saints-Vikings game as the highest-rated NFL kickoff game in the metered markets since the Thursday broadcast launched in 2002. The 30 share was a record for the kickoff game.
“With all the legal and jurisdictional skirmishes leading up to Thursday’s game we knew that a lot of people were going to be watching the official start to the pro football season,” the Deadline report notes. “However, with 66,829 fans in the Foxborough, MA stadium, last night’s kickoff game was up 5% over the MM results of the 2014 match-up between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers.”
