A television station on the East Coast is focusing its resources this week on a story that goes back 450 years. TVNewsCheck reports that WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, Fla., is pulling out all the stops to cover the anniversary of America’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Fla.

The station, an independent owned by Graham Media, is kicking things off with a music festival tonight in the 450-year-old city, “450 Years: St. Augustine Birthday.”

“Sunday night at 7, WJXT airs special programming as part of the St. Augustine’s 450th birthday celebration. ‘The Journey’ tells the little known true story of the first African Americans to reach the new world — not as slaves but as free men,” the story reports. “At 7:30, WJXT offers ‘Travel Thru History Florida: St. Augustine,’ a look at the culture, geography, food and architecture of many Florida destinations including St. Augustine.”

The festivities continue Tuesday, Sept. 8, with live coverage of a re-enactment of the landing of Pedro Menendez, who set up the first permanently occupied territory in what is now the U.S. after coming ashore at St. Augustine on Sept. 9, 1565.

Here’s a teaser posted today by the station:
