With ‘Mamma Mia!’ Finally Having Closed on Broadway Last Month, Perhaps the Next Group that Will Have a NY Musical Hit Are These Rockers Who Became Big International Stars in the Mid-to-Late 1980s

“Mamma Mia!,” based on songs by the Swedish group ABBA, finally closed on Broadway last month, after 14 years and 5,773 performances. It was a huge hit – the 8th longest running show in Broadway history. So what could possibly replace it? Perhaps another jukebox musical by another popular group.

Reports the New York Post, “A musical featuring tunes by Aussie rockers INXS has moved a step closer to Broadway. Chris Murphy — the band’s manager from 1980 to 1995, who returned in 2008 — is in talks with a director to take on the project.”

In the mid-to-late 1980s INXS became popular internationally. Indeed, “According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), INXS have sold 15 million units in the United States alone, making them the third-highest selling Australian music act in the United States, behind AC/DC and The Bee Gees,” says Wikipedia.

Notes InTune, “Between 1983 and 1997, the band landed 18 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 — seven went top 10, including “New Sensation,” “Never Tear Us Apart,” “Suicide Blonde” and its sole No. 1 hit, “Need You Tonight.” INXS also landed five albums in the top 40 of the Billboard 200 chart, including its 1987 LP Kick, which peaked at No. 3.

Here’s the video for ‘Need You Tonight’ that we found on YouTube:

  1. That’s “Mamma Mia!,” not Momma, and with an exclamation point. Even if the Post got it wrong, can’t you folks be better than them?

    • in an interview last week sfpcieically that HRG knows nothing about Clare seeking out her mom or dad, so I thought that might be a little slip that it really isn’t him.

  3. INXS’s singer died from hanging, in a manner that’s usually interpreted as suicide, and sometimes explained as a dangerous sex act. It will be interesting to see how that’s addressed in a cheery, family-friendly jukebox musical.
