HBO placed a series order for a drama about the porn industry from the creator of “The Wire.” Deadline.com reports that David Simon’s “The Deuce” will star James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

“‘The Deuce’ follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world that existed there until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic, and the renewed real estate market ended the bawdy turbulence,” Deadline reports.

Simon, who also has a Capitol Hill drama pilot in the works at HBO with Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein, is writing “The Deuce” with George Pelecanos; “Breaking Bad’s” Michelle MacLaren is on board to direct.
