Sean Penn Breaks His Silence on ‘El Chapo’ Meeting

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has offered his first comment on his interview with a Mexican drug lord since the story of the meeting broke over the weekend. Soon after “El Chapo” — Joaquin Guzman — was captured Friday by Mexican authorities, Rolling Stone magazine published a story written by Penn detailing his secret trek into the jungle to meet with El Chapo a few months ago.

Penn said in an exchange of emails with the AP, “I’ve got nothin’ to hide.” The comment apparently came in response to questions from the AP about photos published today in a Mexican newspaper that indicate officials were keeping an eye on him and Mexican actress Kate Del Castillo in advance of their meeting with Guzman — including photographing them at an airport en route to the jungle rendezvous. It was Del Castillo who arranged the meeting between Penn and Guzman.

“Penn did not respond directly to questions on whether it was appropriate for him to submit his story to Guzman for approval in advance of publication, or whether he took adequate information and operational security measures to protect his source,” the AP notes. Penn has indicated that he was concerned at the time that the trip was being watched.
