Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow faced an alleged stalker in court Monday, testifying against the man who is accused of stalking Paltrow for the past 17 years. The alleged stalker, 67-year-old Dante Soiu, previously spent more than three years in a mental institution following Paltrow’s testimony in a case stemming from his activities back in 1999 and 2000.

“On Monday Paltrow faced Soiu once again, this time in a case filed over 66 letters and packages he has sent the actress in recent years with notes about his desire to marry her, discussing her death and religious writings,” Fox News reports. The latest package from Soiu, in a series that reportedly included pornography, sex toys, religious books, clothes and jewelry, arrived in January 2015.

Reuters, citing a City News Service story reports: “Paltrow, who testified for about three hours, told the court she feared for the safety of her family and said at least one of the letters had arrived directly to her Los Angeles home. Soiu’s attorney, Lynda Westlund, told the court he was harmless and said Paltrow misinterpreted his letters, many of which were biblical in nature and meant as religious messages to the actress, CNS said.”

Fox News adds: “With furrowed brow and at times fighting back tears, Paltrow described the impact of the letters, which first began arriving shortly after she won her best actress Academy Award in 1999 and resumed after a hiatus in 2009.”

Paltrow is quoted saying: “I felt very upset by it. It defied logic, and I found it very, very upsetting. … This was something I had been through a very long and traumatic experience with already.”

Soui was reportedly found not guilty by reason of insanity back in 2000, resulting in his stint in a mental institution. He was re-arrested last year in connection with his recent correspondence with Paltrow.

Among his messages to Paltrow, he reportedly forwarded letters he sent to President Obama and actress Angelina Jolie.
