In an upcoming biopic retelling the story of disgraced ice skater Tonya Harding, blonde beauty Margot Robbie will play Harding.
Deadline.com reports in an exclusive that the Australian actress, who received a lot of attention for her 2013 performance in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” and will play DC Comics supervillain Harley Quinn in “Suicide Squad,” has joined the Harding film project “I, Tonya.”
Harding won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1991, setting up her ill-fated competition with Nancy Kerrigan focused around the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Everything famously began to unravel on Jan. 6, 1994, when Kerrigan was attacked after a practice session and Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, was eventually implicated in the attack.
Harding’s celebrity after her fall from grace has included the release of a sex tape, appearances on reality shows such as TruTV’s “The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest …” and a brief career as a boxer, triggered by Harding’s beatdown of Paula Jones on Fox’s “Celebrity Boxing” in 2002.
Robbie has her own production banner, LuckyChap Entertainment, and is attached in a producing capacity to “I, Tonya,” along with tackling the title role. The movie is being produced by Bryan Unkeless and his Clubhouse Pictures, Deadline reports.
