Netflix is poised to close a deal for a project to star Will Smith and “Star Wars” actor Joel Edgerton. Variety reports that the streaming service has surfaced as the winner of the project, the Max Landis film “Bright,” following a lengthy auction.

“Several studios including Sony and Warner Bros. were in the mix, but sources say Netflix will end up with one of the hotter packages in town,” Variety reports. “The deal is still in the process of being made.”

The film will be directed by David Ayer and produced by Bryan Unkeless and Eric Newman. Not much is known about the plot, but Variety notes that the project will apparently be “set in a world where Orcs and fairies live among humans.”

Edgerton played Owen Lars in “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.”

  1. I wonder if this had anything to do with Smith’s boycotting the Oscars?
