Nine-Year-Old Journalist Becomes a Media Star After Breaking News of Homicide

A 9-year-old Pennsylvania girl has become a media sensation after the youngster broke the news of a killing in her neighborhood. The New York Times reports that Selinsgrove, Pa., girl Hilde Kate Lysiak, who publishes a neighborhood paper called The Orange Street News — with a circulation of about 200 — has now published articles in The Washington Post and The Guardian and booked an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America” — and it appears to be just the beginning.

Lysiak published news of the neighborhood killing Saturday under the headline: “Exclusive: Murder on Ninth Street!”

“Usually, her website is filled with street-level community news, some stories highlighted with a flashing blue-and-red police light.,” The Times reports, quoting the example of a headline that reads: “Breaking: Skunk Shot Dead in Grove! Possibly Rabid!”

“But it was the homicide and her blunt response to her critics that catapulted her to media stardom and enthralled journalists the world over,” The Times reports. “On the day of the killing, Hilde went to the crime scene, interviewed neighbors and posted an article, a photo and a video.”

She has also responded to critics in a style reminiscent of “Jimmy Kimmel Live’s” mean tweets, reading comments from her critics online. (See video below.)

  1. She’s a little too young to be doing that. Bad idea.
