Report: Twitter Said to Have Won the Rights to Stream NFL Thursday Night Football Games. Twitter?

Thursday night NFL games are headed to a seemingly unlikely online home, with Twitter landing rights to the games, according to a Bloomberg report. The deal is part of a strategic push into online programming for the social media site, the report notes.

Twitter reportedly won a bidding war against big players including Verizon Communications, Yahoo! and Amazon.com, with another social media heavyweight, Facebook, apparently dropping out of the bidding last week.

“Twitter will stream 10 Thursday night football games to the public for free, while they are also shown on NBC, CBS and the NFL Network, the NFL said in a statement Tuesday,” Bloomberg reports.

The NFL hopes to use digital rights to its Thursday games as a way to reach cord-cutters, while Twitter is counting on the NFL content to attract mainstream users and elevate its profile as a go-to location for discussing live events, the report notes.

  1. Twitter? Tweally? Does that mean they can only send out video for 140 seconds per tweet? Watching football on a 3X5 inch screen should be SPECTACULAR! Look! I can almost see the ball…. LOL!
