Jon Stewart is on track for a possible return to television in time to deliver his incisive attacks on the November election. Variety reports that HBO CEO Richard Plepler offered hope to Stewart fans during an interview today with CNN’s Brian Stelter.
In the Paley Media Council interview, Stelter asked whether HBO viewers can expect to see Stewart on the pay cable net in time for the general election. Plepler responded, “Yeah, I’m hopeful.”
Stewart has a four-year production deal with HBO. Plepler offered insights into how Stewart’s work will unfold, describing the former “Daily Show” host’s approach to his HBO projects as improvisational.
Variety quotes Plepler saying: “It is a perfect example of bringing a remarkable original voice into the house, giving a new opportunity of expression to that original voice and saying, ‘We now have the flexibility to let you paint however you want to.’ My hunch is it will evolve over time. … He has free rein to do whatever he wants.”
