FX has officially put a “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff into script development, moving the eagerly anticipated project one step closer to becoming a reality, E! News reports.
“Sons” creator Kurt Sutter is overseeing the project. “Mayans MC” focuses on the Latino motorcycle club the Mayans, who played a major role in “Sons of Anarchy.”
FX describes the project as “a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time, reflected through a Latino lens.”
The show is co-created by Elgin James, who will write the pilot. Sutter said of his hiring of James: “I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice, because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
The report notes: “James comes to Mayans MC with one heck of a history. Homeless as a teenager, he was a fixture in Boston’s hardcore punk scene, where he helped found a multi-ethnic national street gang that went after neo-Nazi skinheads and drug dealers.”
“Sons of Anarchy,” which went off the air in 2014 after seven seasons, is FX Networks’ most popular drama series.
