Director of ‘Source Code’ and the Upcoming ‘Warcraft’ Says He Tried to Get a Sci-Fi Film with a Female Lead Greenlighted, But No Studio Would Fund It

The director of the upcoming “Warcraft” feature film says Hollywood still refuses to fund science-fiction blockbusters with women in the lead role, according to a report by Recode.

Duncan Jones said that after his 2011 movie “Source Code” he tried to get a female-led sci-fi film financed and was unable to convince a studio to fund it.

Said Jones: “They didn’t think there would be an audience at the budget that I wanted to make the film.”

Instead, he will be making a follow-up to his low-budget 2009 movie “Moon,” with Paul Rudd and Alexander Skarsgard to star in the new project. The movie, “Mute,” films later this year in Berlin.

  1. That is an interesting story, but why is a female not one of the two leads in his new Movie “Moon”? Since that isn’t “big budget”, it shouldn’t have been difficult to have a woman and adjust the plot to accommodate. Actions speak louder than words!

  2. Yeah… because of misogyny, obviously. Because big budget SF/Fantasy movies with female leads have never ever been made… if we don’t count almost all the Alien movies, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, upcoming Alice Through the Looking Glass, etc., etc., etc.
