A doctor who has gained a following through his innovative use of social media is establishing a new beachhead on cable TV. Variety reports that We TV greenlighted “Dr. Miami,” an unscripted series focusing on the work of plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer.

“Salzhauer’s practice of sharing the intimate details of his procedures on Snapchat and other social media platforms is the hook that spurred AMC Networks’ We TV cabler to give the show a six-episode order,” Variety reports. “‘Dr. Miami’ is another example of unscripted TV series looking to capitalize on personalities who may not be conventional celebrities but have strong social media followings.”

The show comes from 2C Media, Inc.

We TV President Marc Juris said: “We love this show because Dr. Salzhauer is a completely unique and authentic individual who is at the top of his profession and using social media in an innovative and powerful way. Plastic surgery shows have become a staple of unscripted TV, but a surgeon using Snapchat and other social platforms to literally bring fans into the operating room represents a bold and fresh twist that connects old and new media and will give us additional opportunities to attract and engage We TV viewers.”

Here’s a clip of Salzhauer on NBC’s “Today” show …

  1. I thought this was to be an interesting story about Doctor Who…

    What a disappointment!!!!

  2. Ya, I thought the same thing. Bad choice of words for the headline.

  3. I’m not interested in a plastic surgeon that wants to be famous; I want a plastic surgeon who is more interested in being at the top of his/her field. There’s a big difference. Media hog vs. expert.
