A suspect was killed after a standoff with police in Dallas following a deadly ambush of police officers. Meanwhile, the death count rose as a fifth Dallas officer died from gunshot wounds.

CNN reports that the suspect was killed by a bomb carried by a robot, which was detonated by authorities. Dallas Police Chief David Brown told reporters today that the suspect said during the standoff that he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. He also indicated he was upset about recent police shootings.

The ambush took place just as a protest over violence by police officers, fueled by video of recent shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota, was winding down. The suspect said he acted alone, according to Brown, but authorities reportedly had three other suspects in custody.

In addition to the five slain officers, seven others were injured in the shootings, along with two civilians, the story reports. It was reportedly the deadliest single incident for U.S. law enforcement since the 9/11 attacks.
