Supreme Court Justice Says It May Be Time to Leave the U.S. If Donald Trump Is Elected President

Jul 11, 2016  •  Post A Comment

While it’s common for celebrities to threaten to leave the country if a particular candidate becomes president, it’s rare to hear it from Supreme Court justices. But Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made just such a comment about Donald Trump, according to The New York Times.

Ginsburg is quoted in the report saying: “I can’t imagine what this place would be — I can’t imagine what the country would be — with Donald Trump as our president. For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that.”

She adds that she was reminded of something her husband, the late tax attorney Martin D. Ginsburg, would have said: “‘Now it’s time for us to move to New Zealand.’”

Ginsburg was interviewed Friday in her chambers. Please click on the link near the top of this story to read the full article.

  1. Wrong. This is not “rare.” It has NEVER happened before. To say that a Supreme Court Justice making a statement like this is “unprecedented” would be an understatement. Why is it always “liberals” who talk about moving to another country if the outcome of an election is not favorable to “their” candidate??

  2. I wonder if her bags are already packed? Just wondering.

  3. Is this appropriate? Although Justice Ginsberg has the right to express her feelings, is it prudent to do so in the political arena?

  4. Good Lord, it’s usually some Hollywood nincompoop who vows to leave the country if candidate X is elected (and then reneges). I’ve lost any respect for Ginsberg’s hyperbole. This whole “I’ll leave the country” trope is really worn-out.

  5. if anyone “threatens” to leave the country due to some candidate they don’t like being elected, either Democrate or Republican, there ought to be some mechanism in place to hold them to their word. If Trump is elected, he would be head of the government. Ginsberg should recuse herself in any case involving the government as she has already announced her prejudicial feelings toward the government. I wonder if she would be intellectually honest and recuse herself or would she come up with some excuse why she should sit on cases involving the government. This would be an interesting sideshow if Trump is elected.

  6. I have to admit, like many Republican’s, the thought of Trump as President doesn’t leave me feeling very good about the fate of this country. As for leaving, I will stick it out and next time around vote for a true conservative. I wonder what Gov. Sam Brownback is up to?
