A new in-depth report tells the real-world story of events behind the hit Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black.” The story in The Hollywood Reporter describes a heroin-smuggling ring operated by a Nigerian drug lord that used young Americans as drug mules.

The story takes place years before Piper Kerman — the American woman on whom Taylor Schilling’s character in the show, Piper Chapman, is based — was sent to prison.

The show is based on Kerman’s memoir, “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.” Netflix released the show’s fourth season last month.

The THR article goes into detail about the exploits and downfalls of the drug mules and efforts to crack the drug ring. Click on the link near the top of this article to read the full story.
