We Have a $540 Million Winner! One Mega Millions Ticket Sold Matches All Six Numbers!

The California Lottery tweeted this tonight: “Congrats to the one #MegaMillions jackpot winner in Indiana.”

The official Mega Millions website confirmed that there was just one winning ticket tonight. The jackpot was an estimated $540 million.

As of this writing it has not been revealed where in Indiana the winning ticket was sold.

The winning numbers drawn tonight were 8-19-20-55-73 with the mega ball being 5.

CNBC reported earlier today that the “ prize is the seventh largest in U.S. lottery history, and the third largest” Mega Millions drawing ever.

The story adds that the $540 million prize “is only if the winner opts to take the winnings in 30 payments over 29 years. If you want the money now in one lump sum, the jackpot is $380 million, a cut of roughly 30 percent.

“Next up is the federal tax bill. Lottery winnings are taxed as ordinary income.

“‘If they win the jackpot, they’re going to be subject to the highest federal tax rate of 39.6 percent,’ Melissa Labant, director of tax advocacy for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, told CNBC earlier this year. ‘It’s a lot more significant than folks expect.’”

That would leave $229,520,000. Not bad for a buck investment.
