Given one of the prime speaking spots at the Republican National Convention, Ted Cruz wound up being booed Wednesday night as it became clear he was not going to endorse Donald Trump.
Politico reports that Cruz, who lost the GOP nomination to Trump, urged Republicans to vote their conscience.
“To those listening, please, don’t stay home in November,” Cruz said during the speech. “If you love our country and love your children as much as I know that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience. Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.”
The speech was disrupted a number of times, as the crowd booed and chanted “We want Trump” near the end of Cruz’s remarks, and again as Trump made an unannounced entrance, “prompting cheers and pulling the attention away from the main stage,” the story notes.
