The song that was awarded Song of the Year at the 2016 Grammy Awards is now at the center of a lawsuit. Singer-Songwriter Ed Sheeran, one of the most successful musicians of the past few years, was sued by the family of one of the writers of the huge Marvin Gaye hit “Let’s Get It On.”

The AP reports that the complaint accuses the British singer of ripping off Gaye’s song for Sheeran’s hit “Thinking Out Loud.”

“The lawsuit filed by the family of Ed Townsend claims Sheeran copied the ‘heart’ of ‘Let’s Get It On’ and repeated it continuously throughout ‘Thinking Out Loud,'” the story reports. “It says Sheeran continued to perform the song even after he was notified of the copyright infringement claim last year.”

“Let’s Get It On” was a No. 1 hit for Gaye in 1973. Sheeran won Grammys this year for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Thinking Out Loud.”

  1. Same type of Chord progression but it is different.
Sooner or later, everything will sound similar and the melody progressions will sound the same or similar.
A good song is a good song.
Have the producer and label make a counter offer and all will be alright.
May the force be with you.

  2. Nope. Plus, Marvin never had a video like that with 2 people dancing around… 🙂

  3. And let’s play “Trolling for Dollars!”
