What Happened When the Producers of the New TV Drama ‘The Exorcist’ Reached Out to Officials of the Catholic Church?

The team behind the new TV drama “The Exorcist” reached out to the Catholic Church to discuss the project, and was “met with a stony silence,” said executive producer and director Rupert Wyatt.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that Wyatt, talking about development of the Fox series this week at the TCA summer press tour, said the producers, who were looking to consult with real-life exorcists, were eventually contacted by a Catholic priest in Chicago.

“When they got together in person, the man had an explanation for the church’s radio silence,” THR reports.

The story quotes Wyatt saying: “He made it clear that it wasn’t necessarily a lack of willing[ness] to talk to us … but it really comes down to protecting the exorcists. They don’t like to show their faces; they don’t like to break their cover, and that comes from the fact that there are many, many potential cases than have nothing to do with what is ostensibly possession.”

The new Fox show stars Geena Davis.

  1. I suspect that there is also the belief that talking about or romanticising evil gives it power and so should be avoided. Add to that the danger of unprepared people trying to perform exorcisms and I can certainly understand the Church’s reluctance. Whether you believe in this stuff or not, certainly the Church has a right to act based upon their committed beliefs.
