CBS is moving forward with a new comedy series that has been in the works at the network for a while. Variety reports that the network greenlighted “Superior Donuts” with a 13-episode order for the first season, which will bow at midseason.

“Based on the play by Tracy Letts, ‘Superior Donuts’ stars Judd Hirsch and Jermaine Fowler, who has always been attached to the project — both as star and executive producer,” Variety reports. “The series follows the relationship between the gruff owner (Hirsch) of a small donut shop, his enterprising new young employee (Fowler) and their loyal patrons, in a quickly gentrifying Chicago neighborhood.”

The show was picked up to pilot during the past development season, and was then re-piloted, Variety notes. David Koechner, Maz Jobrani, Anna Baryshnikov, Darien Sills-Evans, Rell Battle and Katey Sagal are also in the cast.
