Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos Wins the Nobel Peace Prize

Oct 7, 2016  •  Post A Comment

The Nobel committee announced today that the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. CNN reports that the award was made for Santos’ efforts to end Colombia’s long-running civil war with FARC rebels.

The announcement today in Oslo comes “five days after voters in Colombia narrowly rejected a peace deal that Santos’ government had spent years negotiating,” CNN notes.

The committee’s citation says Santos was awarded the prize for “his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that has cost the lives of at least 220,000 Colombians and displaced close to six million people.”

Santos is quoted saying he accepted the prize “on behalf of all Colombians, especially the millions of victims of this conflict which we have suffered for more than 50 years.”

  1. I applaud his “efforts” but shouldn’t you really have to “accomplish” something to win this award?? Ohh, that’s right…Barak Obama didn’t do anything but get elected in 2008 and he won the award. Sadly, from that moment on, the award lost a LOT of luster.
