The artist known as the Empress of Soul will make a guest appearance on an upcoming episode of the Fox drama series “Star.” Fox announced that Gladys Knight will be appearing on the new series from “Empire” co-creator Lee Daniels.

Knight was a big star in the late ’60s and ’70s as the lead singer in Gladys Knight & the Pips, recording a string of hits including “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” She continued to score hits and take home Grammys as a solo artist.

She will be playing herself on “Star,” where Knight is the idol of Alexandra, played by Ryan Destiny, and the aunt of Danielle, who works in Carlotta’s (Queen Latifah) salon.

“Star” has a special premiere set for Wednesday, Dec. 14, on Fox, leading out from the fall finale of “Empire.” The show settles into its 9 p.m. slot on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
