Remember the decade-long, mid-1990’s CBS hit “Touched by an Angel” starring Della Reese? Sounds like the folks at the CW do as well.

“Filmmaker John Singleton has set a drama project at the CW and [CW co-owner] Warner Bros. TV that mixes faith-based storytelling with hip-hop,” reports Variety, noting that the show will be called “Straight Outta Heaven.”

Variety says the plot “revolves around a hip-hop star who dies but comes back to life as a guardian angel.”

“Singleton nabbed an Emmy nomination this year for directing an episode of FX’s ‘The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,’” Variety notes, adding “That nom made him the first African-American director ever to receive an Emmy nomination and an Oscar nomination, which Singleton earned for his debut feature, 1991’s ‘Boyz in the Hood.’” Besides his directing nomination for “Boyz,” Singleton also nabbed an Academy Award nomination for writing the film’s screenplay.
