Katie Couric to Return to NBC’s ‘Today’ Show — But There’s a Catch

Katie Couric is returning to the show where she became one of television’s most familiar faces during a tenure that ran from 1991-2006. But there’s a catch: Her visit to NBC’s “Today” show will be just that, a visit, as Couric is set for a one-week gig filling in for Savannah Guthrie.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Couric will be reunited with her longtime co-anchor Matt Lauer during the guest-hosting gig, set for the week of Jan. 2. The report cites unnamed sources at the show who are familiar with the situation.

“Couric will be substituting for Lauer’s current on-air partner, Savannah Guthrie, who is on maternity leave after giving birth to her second child Dec. 9,” the report notes. “Guthrie recently signed a new long-term contract with ‘Today.’”

Couric, who became the first solo female anchor of a broadcast network evening newscast when she left “Today” to work at CBS, has been global anchor for Yahoo News since 2014.
