A number of Top 10 lists have been surfacing as the year winds down, with many critics observing that 2016 has been a good year for quality television. Writing on Philly.com, veteran TV critic Ellen Gray recently published her list of the 10 best shows of the year, and we like it for at least a couple of reasons: (1) We tend to agree with it, and (2) Gray includes details on where to watch each of the shows, which is helpful given a complicated TV landscape that now includes streaming, on-demand, mobile and linear options.
At the top of Gray’s list are FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” FX’s “The Americans” and the Netflix series “The Crown.” After her big three, the rest of Gray’s top 10 shows are in no particular order.
The rest of her top 10 consists of FX’s “Atlanta,” SundanceTV’s “Rectify,” ABC’s “Speechless,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” ABC’s “American Crime” and FX’s “You’re the Worst.”
Gray notes that the absence of “Game of Thrones,” “Orange Is the New Black,” “Stranger Things,” “The Night Of” and “The Night Manager” from her list — “all shows I loved” — illustrates how strong the lineup of entertainment programs was this year.
