New research out today reveals that the number of scripted original series on television climbed in 2016, with all of the growth in the online sector.

The study by the FX Networks Research team shows the total number of scripted original series at 455 this year, up from 421 in 2015. Online services saw explosive growth, with scripted originals in that sector surging from 46 a year ago to 93 this year.

The other three segments measured were all down: Broadcast dipped from 150 scripted originals in 2015 to 145 in 2016, pay cable slipped from 37 to 36 this year and basic cable saw its total fall from 188 to 181.

The overall growth trend has continued at a steady pace since 2010, when the first scripted originals appeared on online services. The researchers noted that the total of 455 this year represents a 71% increase over just five years ago, when the total number was 266.
