Uh-Oh: Counterprogramming Event Slated to Run Opposite the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — to Be Hosted by an Outspoken Trump Critic

One of television’s most outspoken critics of Donald Trump will host a counterprogramming event billed as “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” taking place the same night as the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

TBS announced plans today for the gala event, a special installment of Samantha Bee’s TBS late-night show, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.” The event will take place Saturday, April 29, at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C.

TBS notes that Bee will be “welcoming journalists and non-irritating celebrities from around the world. We suspect some members of the press may find themselves unexpectedly free that night, and we want to feed them and give them hugs.”

Added Bee: “Executives at TBS offered their full support of the gala by nodding politely and then muttering under their breath as we turned around. The evening is sure to bring plenty of surprises, music, food, and laughter — and if you’re not careful you just might learn something. Specifically, you’ll learn how screwed we’d be without a free press.”

The TBS announcement also notes: “Though unrelated, Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner will happen at the exact same time as the official White House Correspondents’ Dinner. What an incredible coincidence.”

TBS adds: “All proceeds for ‘Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner’ will go to the Committee to Protect Journalists (cpj.org), whether they like it or not. They certainly didn’t ask for the support of a woman whom Newsbusters once called ‘an unfunny, feminist battle ax.'”

Bee added: “We’re really doing this. This is not a joke.”

  1. I wonder what the correspondents’ dinner will be like. Unlike previous ones, this will probably be pretty subdued and sedate. While previous presidents have taken the ripping they get at this event with laughter, I doubt that Trump will. I saw Seth Meyers tear into him at a correspondents’ dinner a few years ago, and when the cameras focused on Trump, he was so angry it looked like his head was about to explode.

  2. The media has punched themselves in the eye! They didn’t report the news but rather tried to influence it at every turn. The ability for ‘light hearted’ cordial exchanges at this event have been all but obliterated. If the media folks in attendance were to be poking more fun at themselves than the officials and candidates they tried to obliterate, they might make a very slight move back into the world of public trust. As it stands right now, the public has turned against the elite liberal “we know better than you” media and currency manipulating puppet masters!

  3. It will be very interesting to see how the media handles this event. Will they be able to be cordial or will it be like the SAG and Golden Globes with constant attacks and bad attitudes; especially towards the new media.

  4. My hope is that the Trump era will bring these White House Correspondent’s Association Dinners to an end. The job of those reporters is to be a pain in the rear-end for whoever is president, and listening to them all yuck it up like old friends is unseemly at best. I thought it was inappropriate when Bush was president, and when Obama was president. And it’s definitely inappropriate now that Trump[ is in there.

So please quit acting like you’re all best buddies for one evening, and instead go out and do your jobs of holding the president’s feet to the fire.

    • Wrong! Journalists are supposed to simply report the news. Even investigative journalists are supposed to simply report the results they uncover. They are not supposed to present bias or editorialize unless it is clearly noted as an editorial. If a journalist favors a political party in their private life it should never be apparent in public or in their reporting. Journalism has been a public trust – but that was violated and organizations like the New York Times and MSNBC are paying the price. The media plays “gotcha” with Republicans and does nothing but hand holding and support for Democrats. That a Republican administration sees the media as the opposition party is the media’s own fault. That Tom D thinks it is their job to oppose the President and “hold his feet to the fire” certainly shows the impact unbalanced journalism has had.
