“Since 1989, USA Today’s Ad Meter has been one of the USA’s most closely watched symbols of advertising excellence” for the Super Bowl, the newspaper writes, noting that “This year, more than 15,000 active voters weighed in on their favorites.”
Coming in first place was “Hero’s Journey,” a funny environmentally-themed auto spot from Kia, starring Melissa McCarthy.
After the No. 1-ranked Kia commercial came No. 2-ranked “Yearbooks.” This 60-second spot, from Honda, featured Tina Fey, Robert Redford, Amy Adams, Magic Johnson, Steve Carell, Missy Elliott, Stan Lee, Jimmy Kimmel, and Viola Davis.
No. 3 was yet another auto commercial, this one from Audi, called “Daughter.” USA Today called it “a powerful 60-second spot that shows a father watching his daughter weave her way down the course in a cart race. Her father worries about her place in the world as she drives to first place in the race.”
No. 4 was “Born the Hard Way,” an ad “telling the immigrant story of Budweiser co-founder Adolphus Busch,” writes the paper. No. 5 was Tide’s commercial featuring a stain on the shirt of NFL sports analyst (and former NFL player) Terry Bradshaw.
On a 10-point scale, here’s how the top 5 ranked: 1) 7.47; 2) 6.97; 3) 6.88; 4) 6.85, 5) 6.78
Here are the top 5 commercials. We have added our favorite Super Bowl commercial as No. 6. It ran in the post-game coverage so it wasn’t counted as being “in the Super Bowl.” It was a 90-second commercial put together live, during the game, by Hyundai, featuring U.S. soldiers deployed overseas.
