An actor who starred in the original “Battlestar Galactica” TV series, returning decades later to be a part of a reboot of the show, has died. The AP reports that Richard Hatch, who played Captain Apollo in ABC’s original “Battlestar Galactica,” died Tuesday afternoon following a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71.

Hatch had a number of TV roles during his career, including an early appearance on “All My Children” in 1971, followed by guest roles on many shows — “Barnaby Jones,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “The Waltons”  and “Cannon,” to name a few. He found steady work as Inspector Dan Robbins on “The Streets of San Francisco” from 1976-77, shortly before landing his career-defining lead role on “Battlestar Galactica.”

The beloved sci-fi show lasted just one season on ABC in 1978-79, earning Hatch a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 1979.

When “Battlestar Galactica” was rebooted in 2004 for what turned out to be a four-season run on the Sci-Fi Channel, Hatch appeared in a recurring role as Tom Zarek.

The actor worked steadily on TV for decades, including arcs on “Dynasty,” “Santa Barbara” and “Baywatch.”

  1. Richard Hatch also appeared as a regular on the followup “Galactica 1980” series (currently available on DVD)— which was a second season of the original Battlestar Galactica series. One notable Galactica 1980 episode was the Return of Starbuck (played by Richard Hatch) episode.

    • Sorry David, but Hatch was not on Galactica 1980 due to budget cuts. Kent McCord was brought in to play Apollo’s grown son Boxey instead. Dirk Benedick did play Starbuck in one episode. Hatch did write a number of Galactica fiction books before the show was rebooted in 2004.

One of Hatch’s last roles was in an episode of Star Trek: New Voyages. A fan film that was never released due to the lawsuit against another Trek fan film. I hope CBS will now let it be shown as a tribute to him.
