A Super Bowl counterprogramming event had a dominant outing on cable Sunday, when the turnout for Animal Planet’s “Puppy Bowl XIII” — the second-highest-rated Puppy Bowl ever, according to the network — fetched some of television’s top ratings of the day in key demos.

“‘Puppy Bowl XIII’ pushed Animal Planet to rank #1 in its time period on all of cable among Total Viewers P2+, Adults 25-54, Men 25-54, Women 25-54, Persons 18-49, Women 18-49, Persons 18-34,” Animal Planet announced, citing Nielsen Live+Same Day data. “Puppy Bowl XIII’ dominated as the #1 cable telecast of the day among Total Viewers P2+, Women 25-54 and Women 18-49 and was the #1 non-sports cable telecast of the day among Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.”

The program delivered a 1.11 average rating in adults 25-54 from 3-5 p.m. ET, the second-best number ever for the event, behind only a 1.25 for “Puppy Bowl X” in 2014. This year’s result was up 4% from a 1.07 a year ago.

The program averaged 2.5 million total viewers, up 12% from 2.2 million a year ago. “Other key demos that were up included Men 25-54 (+9%), Adults 18-49 (+17%), Adults 18-34 (+20%) and Adults 12-17 (+49%),” Animal Planet noted.

In some key demos, “Puppy Bowl XIII” was the No. 2 show on all of television in its time slot, behind only the Super Bowl coverage on Fox. Animal Planet announced that for the fifth consecutive year, the program was No. 2 in the period among women 25-54 and women 18-49, without exclusions, topping not only all of cable but also ABC, NBC and CBS.

The momentum from the Puppy Bowl also helped Animal Planet get its new series “Animal Nation with Anthony Anderson” off to a strong start. Leading out from the Puppy Bowl, the premiere of “Anthony Anderson” was Animal Planet’s best series launch in nearly three years in the 25-54 demo, delivering a .51 average rating.

“The episode drove Animal Planet to break into cable top five networks in its time period in Adults 25-54 (#4), Men 25-54 (#5), Adults 18-49 (#4), Men 18-49 (#3), Women 18-49 (#4), Adults 18-34 (#3), and Adults 12-17 (#4),” Animal Planet reported, noting that “Animal Nation with Anthony Anderson” will air in its regular time slot beginning Friday, Feb. 10, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
