Guitar legend Carlos Santana found himself in the crosshairs of the “legions of offended” on social media after a comment he made about Beyonce after the Grammys caused her fans to rise up against him.

Santana took to his Facebook page to offer a clarification. It’s being reported as an “apology,” but we don’t see an apology here. This is what he wrote:

“I would like to clarify a comment that was reported when I was doing an interview for some upcoming shows in Australia & New Zealand. My intent was to congratulate Adele on her amazing night at the Grammies. My comment about Beyonce was regretfully taken out of context. I have the utmost respect for her as an artist and a person. She deserves all the accolades that come her way. I wish Beyonce and her family all the best. Carlos”

Santana’s original comments that sparked the uproar were reported by the Australian Associated Press. In a story published Tuesday, following up on Adele’s big night at the Grammys — in which Beyonce was again shut out of the major awards — Santana told the news organization: “I think that Adele won because she can sing sing.”

He added: “With all respect to our sister Beyonce, Beyonce is very beautiful to look at and it’s more like modeling kind of music — music to model a dress — she’s not a singer singer, with all respect to her.”

Santana said of Adele: “She doesn’t bring all the dancers and props, she can just stand there and she just stood there and sang the song and that’s it, and this is why she wins.”

Rolling Stone notes that even Adele suggested, while she was accepting her trophies Sunday, that Beyonce’s “Lemonade” should have won Album of the Year. Instead, the award went to Adele’s “25.”
