CBS announced Monday that it has given a series order to the new single-camera comedy “Young Sheldon,” a prequel to “The Big Bang Theory” focusing on a 9-year-old version of Sheldon Cooper.

Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon on “The Big Bang Theory,” will be a part of the new show, narrating the series as the adult Sheldon. Parsons is also an executive producer on the series, which is set for the 2017-2018 season.

The part of 9-year-old Sheldon will be played by Iain Armitage. Jon Favreau will direct and executive produce the series’ first episode.

Created by Chuck Lorre & Steven Molaro, the new show also stars Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Raegan Revord and Montana Jordan.

Lorre, Molaro, Parsons and Todd Spiewak are executive producers of the series, which comes from Chuck Lorre Productions Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television.
